How Your Family Can Stay Safe For the Holidays

COVID-19 has posed unique challenges for families who want to come together for the holidays. Many wish to follow distancing guidelines to stay healthy and safe.

Travel advisories are currently in place, as well as quarantine guidelines if families do choose to travel. Some people are choosing not to see family or friends outside of their immediate home this season.

How can you still celebrate with friends and family if you cannot travel or visit with those outside of the home? We offer a few suggestions that may keep you healthy and provide a joyous holiday season.

What are Some Holiday Safety Suggestions for 2020?

Not only has the CDC offered suggestions for decreasing COVID-19 surges, but health professionals have additional safety tips for the holidays and winter. Winter is often a time of risk for health and safety due to inclement weather, influenza, and more time indoors, potentially spreading illness.

Here are some suggestions from health professionals to keep your family healthy safe during this time and beyond:

Limit Social Gatherings and Replace With Virtual Gatherings

Right now, it is important to limit social gatherings as much as possible. It is recommended to restrict gatherings outside of the home. Suppose families do choose to come together. It is best to keep it small and for a short time. A great alternative is virtual gatherings.

Remember, virtual gatherings keep those who are at high risk safe. You can still see, hear, and enjoy time with the family while keeping everyone healthy. Many have found they can play games, sing songs, even watch movies during virtual gatherings. You can still have fun while being creative!

Limit Traveling and Use Precautions

If you do travel, either by air or car, wear a mask. Remember to wash hands and practice social distancing from others. Please do not travel if you are sick or at high risk, and always seek COVID-19 testing if you show symptoms of the virus. We offer COVID-19 testing at our following sites:

Health professionals also are recommending vaccinating against influenza before travel or the holidays. Remember, it can take up to 2 weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop.

Also, be careful regarding inclement weather. Take precautions regarding snow and ice, not only when driving, but when walking in winter weather if you travel to a colder climate. Be aware that falls can cause multiple injuries, including:

  • Fractures
  • Springs
  • Lacerations
  • Head Injuries

Seek help at Urgent Care of the Palm Beaches  if you have a fall and need treatment.

What are Some Activities That Reduce Risk of Illness?

There are a few additional suggestions for activities that may help keep you safe while having fun:

  • Do your holiday shopping online instead of at stores
  • Drive or walk to see holiday decorations
  • Have a virtual caroling session with family
  • Watch a Holiday Movie virtually with friends

Understand your holidays may look different this year, but it is all to keep everyone safe. If everyone does their part, we can continue to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
