We all need to stay hydrated to stay healthy. Hydration is essential to human survival. Many factors may cause fluid loss, including vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive sweating. Feeling thirsty is only one sign you may notice when you are dehydrated.

It is important to know that when you are dehydrated, you are also at risk of losing important electrolytes such as salt and potassium. These electrolytes are necessary for the body to be able to function correctly.

There are some signs of dehydration that are not as obvious as thirst. So what are some signs of dehydration of which you may not be aware? We will cover 5 signs you should pay attention to that may be signs of dehydration.

  1. Bad Breath

One of the side effects of this is bad breath. Dehydration can prevent the body from making enough saliva. That may contribute to bacterial overgrowth in the mouth.

If you notice a dry mouth and your breath has a smell, especially in the morning, it may be time to hydrate well.

  1. Muscle Cramping

Muscle cramping can be a symptom of dehydration. You might especially notice the symptom if you are exercising outside when it is hot out. Loss of essential nutrients from dehydration contributes to muscle cramping.

There is evidence that it may be more beneficial to hydrate with an electrolyte sports drink rather than water during exercise. No matter where you are exercising or what you choose to drink, staying hydrated is essential to avoid muscle cramping.

  1. Dry Skin

Another sign of dehydration is dry skin. Your skin can also appear flushed if you are dehydrated. One way to test if you are hydrated enough is to pinch the skin on your hand. Notice if it “tents” and stays that way for a second or more or if it bounces back to normal right away. If it remains “tented,” you are likely dehydrated.

  1. Fever or Chills

Heat-related illness can cause a fever or chills. When you are dehydrated, you may sweat, but the skin feels cool to the touch.

If you have a fever, you are at an even greater risk for dehydration. Skin can become clammy and flushed. At this point, it is important to consider visiting an urgent care or make an appointment for telemedicine urgent care to see if further intervention is needed for hydration.

If you are concerned COVID-19 is causing symptoms of fever and chills, consider rapid COVID testing at an urgent care center for accurate diagnosis.

  1. Headaches

Headaches are a common symptom of dehydration. Even slight dehydration can trigger a headache. If you are prone to migraines, you may be at risk of triggering a headache due to a lack of hydration.

It can help to drink a full glass of water and then take small sips throughout the day to help hydrate the body. It may help relieve some of the headache pain you are experiencing.
