What is Drug Testing and Drug Screening?

Drug testing and drug screening are two terms that are often used interchangeably, but there is a slight difference between the two.

Drug testing analyzes a biological sample, such as urine, blood, hair, or saliva, to detect the presence of drugs or their metabolites.

On the other hand, drug screening is a broader term that refers to both drug testing and the evaluation of different factors, such as medical history and prescription drug use, to determine the likelihood of drug use.

Why is Drug Testing and Drug Screening Important?

Drug use in the workplace can have serious consequences, both for the employees and the organization. It can lead to decreased productivity, increased absenteeism, workplace accidents, and even legal issues. As an employer, you are responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for your employees. Drug testing and drug screening are crucial tools in achieving this goal.

Here are some other reasons why drug testing and drug screening are essential:
Ensures Workplace Safety

Drug use can impair an individual’s judgment, coordination, and performance, making them prone to accidents. With regular drug testing and screening, you can identify employees who may be under the influence of drugs and take necessary action to prevent accidents.

Prevents Employee Theft

Drug use can also lead to financial strain, which may result in employees resorting to theft or fraud to support their habit. By conducting drug testing and screening, you can identify employees at risk of engaging in such activities and take necessary measures.

Protects Your Brand and Reputation

An incident involving an employee under the influence of drugs can have severe consequences on your organization’s brand and reputation. You proactively mitigate potential risks and maintain your organization’s integrity by implementing drug testing and screening.

Promotes a Positive Work Environment

Drug use can negatively impact the culture of your workplace. Promoting a drug-free workplace ensures your employees a positive and healthy work environment. This can also help improve employee morale and retention.

For Employers

At Urgent Care of the Palm Beaches, we make it easy for you to organize your pre-employment drug screening (including DOT physicals) and handle any accident-related or reasonable suspicion drug testing.

If you implement a drug-free workplace program, you will likely qualify for a discount on your workers’ compensation insurance premium. To implement the program correctly, you are permitted to test under three main conditions:

  • Pre-employment drug testing – this includes as part of DOT physicals.
  • Accident-related drug testing – if there is an accident at your job site, the employee(s) involved must be tested immediately to check whether they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Reasonable suspicion – if the employee is behaving strangely (erratic or abnormal behavior), displays characteristics of active drug use, or has been reported to be using drugs

Florida employers may also test employees who want to return to work who had a positive drug test but completed rehabilitation. In some cases, random drug testing may also be permitted.

Setting up testing for your team? Call any location and ask for our employer services. We walk you through the options and can bill your company directly.

For Employees

If you were recently hired by a company with a drug-free workplace program, you must complete a pre-employment drug screen and physical. As part of this process, you will fill out a health history form and give a urine sample (to be done on-site) for drug testing.

For DOT physicals, there is a separate form and exam. You will meet with a doctor to check your vital signs and reflexes. Your drug testing results are usually available within three days maximum. If anything unusual is found during the physical or drug screen, you can receive a referral to a doctor or visit our walk-in clinic in Wellington.
