Why it matters
Most allergic reactions are uncomfortable rather than dangerous, and the right medication settles them quickly. The important part is telling a routine reaction apart from a severe one, which we do the moment you walk in.

Allergy problems we treat
- Seasonal allergies with congestion, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes
- Hives and itchy skin rashes from a reaction
- Mild reactions to food, medication, or insect stings
- Reactions to plants, pollen, mold, and pet dander
- Skin swelling and irritation that is spreading but not affecting breathing
Your provider first checks how serious the reaction is, since that guides everything. For hives and mild to moderate reactions, we treat with antihistamines, steroids, and other medication as needed to stop the itching and swelling and keep it from spreading. For seasonal allergies, we help you get symptoms under control and talk through what to keep on hand at home so you are ready next season. If you have had a serious reaction before, we will also talk about carrying emergency medication.

Straight talk
Urgent care, the ER, or your doctor?
Hives, seasonal flare-ups, and mild reactions are a good fit for urgent care, which is faster and cheaper than an emergency room.
A severe reaction that affects breathing is different and is a 911 emergency, described below. For allergy testing and long-term immunotherapy, an allergist is the right specialist, and we can refer you.
Allergy relief at home
What you can do at home
For seasonal symptoms, over-the-counter antihistamines, rinsing pollen off at the end of the day, and keeping windows closed on high-pollen days all help. For a mild skin reaction, a cool compress and an antihistamine can ease the itch while you decide whether to come in.
Emergency warning signs
When an allergic reaction is an emergency
Call 911 immediately for signs of a severe reaction: trouble breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, tightness in the chest, a hoarse voice, dizziness, or fainting. This can be anaphylaxis, and it needs emergency treatment right away. If you have an epinephrine auto-injector, use it and then call 911.
FAQ
Allergy questions, answered
What is the difference between a cold and allergies?
Allergies usually bring itchy eyes and sneezing without a fever and can last for weeks, while a cold tends to come with a sore throat or fever and clears within about ten days. If you are not sure, we can help sort it out.
When is an allergic reaction an emergency?
Any trouble breathing, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, is an emergency. Call 911 and use an epinephrine auto-injector if you have one.
Can you treat hives?
Yes. We treat hives with antihistamines and steroids as needed and check that the reaction is not part of something more serious.
Do you treat food or insect sting reactions?
We treat mild to moderate reactions to food, medication, and stings. A severe reaction with breathing trouble is a 911 emergency.
