Why it matters

The right early care on a burn lowers your risk of infection and scarring and helps it heal faster. The main question with any burn is how deep and how large it is, which decides whether urgent care or the ER is the right place.

First degree burn · Second degree burn

Understanding burn depth

Contact us

A first-degree burn affects only the top layer of skin and looks red and dry, like a mild sunburn. A second-degree burn goes a little deeper, causing blisters, swelling, and more pain. Small first- and second-degree burns are exactly what urgent care handles well. Deep burns that look white, leathery, or charred, and burns that cover a large area, need emergency care.

Clinic for burns

How we treat a burn

Your provider cleans the burn gently, treats it to lower the risk of infection, and applies the right dressing so it can heal. We manage the pain, drain or protect blisters when that is the safer choice, and update your tetanus shot if you are due. Before you leave, we show you how to change the dressing and care for it at home, and we tell you the signs of infection to watch for.

Your visit

What to expect at your visit

Walk in to any of our three locations and you are usually seen within about ten minutes. Cleaning, dressing, pain relief, and any tetanus shot happen in one visit. We accept most major insurance and offer fair cash pricing.

What you can do right away

For a minor burn, run cool, not cold, water over it for several minutes, and do not use ice, which can damage the skin further. Do not pop blisters, and do not put butter or toothpaste on a burn. Cover it loosely with a clean cloth and come in to be treated.

Emergency warning signs

When a burn needs the ER

Go to the emergency room, or call 911, for burns that are large, roughly bigger than the size of your palm, burns that look deep, white, or leathery, and any burn on the face, hands, feet, joints, or genitals. Chemical burns and electrical burns also need emergency care. When you are unsure how serious a burn is, call us and we will help you decide.

FAQ

Burn questions, answered

What degree of burn needs a doctor?

Small first- and second-degree burns can be treated at urgent care. Deep burns, large burns, and burns on the face, hands, feet, or genitals need the ER.

Should I pop a blister?

No. Leave blisters intact when you can, since the skin protects against infection. A provider will decide if a blister needs to be drained safely.

How do I treat a burn at home right away?

Cool the burn under running water for several minutes, do not use ice, do not apply butter or ointments, and cover it loosely with a clean cloth until you can be seen.

Do I need a tetanus shot for a burn?

Possibly. If you are not up to date, we can update your tetanus shot during the same visit.
